Since 2020, Broadway has been tested time and again by COVID-19 related delays and shutdowns, leading to a postponed, virtual Tony Awards ceremony last year. But happy days are here again for theatergoers: the Tony Awards 2022 are once again being held live at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 12.

The 75th annual Tonys will celebrate Broadway’s best from the 2021-2022 season and be hosted by newly-minted Oscar winner Ariana DeBose. Michael R. Jackson’s autobiographical musical A Strange Loop leads the Tony nominations with 11 nods, including best musical, followed by Paradise Square and MJ, the Michael Jackson show, with 10 apiece. Other productions likely to be honored include Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster’s revival of The Music Man, Patti Lupone-led Company, Billy Crystal’s Mr. Saturday Night (based on his 1992 film), and The Lehman Trilogy—Broadway’s most-nominated play of the year with eight nods.

How to watch the song-and-dance festivities? Your options are a bit different this year. The Tony Awards: Act One starts at 7 p.m. ET and streams exclusively on Paramount+. Hosted by Darren Criss and Julianne Hough, both currently starring in plays on Broadway, the pre-show will include some awards and special performances. Then at 8 p.m. ET, the official Tony Awards (confusingly not billed as The Tony Awards: Act Two) will kick off on both Paramount+ and CBS. The main ceremony will also be airing on live-TV streaming platforms like YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV.

Presenters for the evening include Jessica Chastain, Cynthia Erivo, Andrew Garfield, Samuel L. Jackson, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, to name a few. The cast of Spring Awakening will have a reunion performance, following their recent HBO special. Also slated for some toe-tapping are Bernadette Peters, Billy Porter, and the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus. To top it all off, 96-year-old Angela Lansbury receives a lifetime achievement award after five Tony wins of her own.

This will be the first Tony Awards since theater titan Stephen Sondheim’s death. Sondheim won seven Tonys during his career, including his own lifetime achievement honor in 2008. Although no formal plans have been announced, expect a moving tribute to the man behind seminal shows such as Into the Woods, Company, and Sunday in the Park with George. What better way for the Broadway community to tip its hat to the maestro?
